class war on the dance floor – the rebel beat radio show

We’ve been huge fans of the ROOTS ROCK REBEL radio show (on CKUT in Montreal) for a long time now…just a fantastic mix of reggae, ska, punk, rocksteady, soul, hardcore and more and infused with healthy dose of left-radical politics.

rootsrockrebel

DJ Aaron Maiden had this to say about ROOTS ROCK REBEL:

“Roots Rock Rebel is a show which wears its politics on its sleeve. We have a strong belief in radical, anti-authoritarian politics and lifestyle. This goes hand in hand with Roots Rock Rebel, in our opinion, because ska music was the music of Jamaica’s liberation, and the music of the shantytowns. At its core, it is a rebellious, working-class, people’s music. The 2-Tone movement brought an anti-racist consciousness into ska and punk, and as the Specials said, “if you have a racist friend, now is the time for your friendship to end.” So turn up your speakers, slap on your dancing boots, and fire yor boss! Because if I can’t fucking skank, it’s not my revolution.”

Well, Roots Rock Rebel is no more.

However, having said that, Aaron is hosting up a new show! This one is called THE REBEL BEAT

Here’s the Press Release about the new show:

To all the Roots Rock Rebel listeners, fans, supporters,

To all the rude boys, rude girls, punks, mods, and rockers,

therebelbeatI have some bittersweet news. After broadcasting for 9 years, Roots Rock Rebel will be no more after January 2015. It has been an incredible passion and honour for me to serve the local and international ska, punk, and reggae scenes with this show, interviewing bands from around the world, and giving space to promote underground artists.

I am going to carry on doing a radio show and podcast every Wednesday from 10pm-12am on CKUT, but the show is getting a total overhaul. So I’m very excited to introduce to all of you – The Rebel Beat.

The Rebel Beat will launch with its first edition on February 4, 2015.

Roots Rock Rebel has always been about ska, reggae, punk, and class war on the dance floor. With The Rebel Beat, my plan is to put the emphasis on the latter, and showcase revolutionary political music across different genres, and across different continents.

We live in serious times. Militarized police states. Ecological devastation taking such a toll on our planet. Racism so crude that you’d think it was 1950, not 2015. But serious times call for serious action, and a serious soundtrack. That is where I hope The Rebel Beat will come in – a show to connect musicians and artists with global movements for revolutionary change. Indeed, class war on the dance floor.

What will you hear when you tune in? Less ska and reggae, more hip-hop against police brutality, riot folk, anarcho-punk, union picket line hymns, slam poetry, plus interviews with artists, agitators, revolutionaries, community organizers, and more.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has listened to the show over the years and supported us. People who have really come through and who should be named include: Val Desnoyers, Cath Marchand, Reggie McClean and the Fundamentals, Victor Rice (who composed our theme song!), Danny Rebel and the KGB, Kman and the 45s, Lorraine Muller, Matt, Mike, Lora, Alex, and everyone at Stomp Records, Rebel Time Records, Jay Nugent, Dave Hillyard, and the Slackers, The Hangers, and of course the whole Montreal Ska Festival crew.

Below you’ll find some more info on The Rebel Beat. I hope you keep tuning in every Wednesday night on CKUT, or keep downloading the podcast, because this new show promises to be amazing.

At its core, it is a rebellious, working-class, people’s music. INTERVIEW WITH SPANNER….

In what can only be described as a monumental meeting of the minds, Aaron from the Roots Rock Rebel! radio show out of Montreal took some time out from smashing the state to have a few words with Nick and Ben from our favourite militant ska-punk band Spanner…

As per the show description:

“This week our special guests were Spanner, a ska-punk band from Bristol, England, who definitely know which side they’re on. We did an interview with Nick, the drummer, and Ben, who plays guitar and rants. They both ranted about everything from the global economic crisis, to anarchist politics, to ska music, to their new album “Crisis”. If you’re a fan of ska-punk bands who don’t sell-out their values, great politcally charged bands like Operation Ivy, Leftover Crack, or Against All Authority, then you’ll probably like Spanner. You can pick up Spanner’s music in North America through the good folks at Rebel Time Records.”

Check out the interview (and some great, great music) HERE.  Just do it.

“TURN IT DOWN” INTERVIEW

Photobucket

Nora from TURN IT DOWN: A CAMPAIGN AGAINST WHITE POWER MUSIC was interviewed on the Roots Rock Rebel Radio show on Wednesday, November 18th. Nora talked about anti-racist organizing and the campaign around the NORTHERN AGGRESSION: PROJECT BONEYARD VOLUME II compilation. You can both stream and download the interview: HERE. In addition to the interview, host Aaron spins some great reggae, ska, punk and hardcore! Here’s a bit about the episode:

Roots Rock Rebel
Wednesday, November 18, 2009
10pm-12am
CKUT, 90.3FM, Montreal!

Greetings radio junkies,

Yes, this beautiful/miserable planet of ours is a racist racist place. In
Canada, migrants are being deported by the thousands every year while we
talk about “reasonable accomodations”, indigenous land is getting
swallowed up for the winter Olympics and to build condos for the rich, and
no, Palestine still ain’t free.
But luckily, people in the punk rock and ska community are fighting back.
Our special guest on the show this week was Nora Flanagan, who is the
project coordinator for the Turn It Down campaign against white power
music. Nora spoke with us about how her group is using community
organizing as a tool to counter a new rise in racist hate music, and also
about the new “Northern Agression” compilation, recently released on
Insurgence Records. Northern Aggression brings together some of North
America’s finest anti-racist punk, hardcore, and hip-hop acts to give a
big middle finger to racists everywhere. From the dirty rock from whence
they crawled, to the halls of the House of Commons in Ottawa, NAZI PUNKS
FUCK OFF!

Make sure you check out Turn It Down and Northern Aggression and SUPPORT
YOUR LOCAL ANTI-RACISTS!
