I managed to snag a copy of the latest issue of FREE SOCIETY at the local Anarchist Book Fair a couple of weeks ago. All I can say is: Holy Head Of Jesus!!
I was literally taken aback when I saw it. Stu has really outdone himself on this one. He’s kicked it up a notch, taking the zine from a half-size photo-copied affair to a glossy, full-size 50-page D.I.Y. digest. A lot of time, energy and effort have gone into issue 19 and it shows…it’s a real labour of love.
And, it not only looks good, but it reads good too. It really is a fine blend of music and politics. You get Stu’s well-articulated and timely thoughts on the Security And Prosperity Partnership, Indigenous struggles and more as well as interviews with the likes of Cresote and Rakkaus. There’s book reviews, record reviews and zine reviews. Free Society has it all.
But, my favourite part of this zine was Stu’s touching ode/tribute to his recently departed Super-Duper-Cycle. It made me want to go out to the garage and give my own two-wheeler a hug. Stu’s own personal musings are always appreciated, they give Free Society a bit of a ‘homey’ touch.
And, it was nice to read that Stu is, like myself, a big fan of Zatarain’s Dirty Rice Mix…good eatin’ for sure.
Issue 20 of Free Society is going to include a compilation of Canadian bands, so stay tuned for that one! Stu hopes to have it out in a month or two.
So, my advice? Cook yourself up a box of Zatarains, grab a copy of Free Society and
your beverage of choice and settle in for a good, long read.
