THE RUCKS

THE RUCKS

Holy Cow! THE RUCKS are a newish 3-piece out of Chatham, Ontario. I caught them at the Punk Rock Matinee on June 21 and they blew me away. Catchy-as-heck? Yes! Sing-a-long, heartfelt punk rock? Yes! Righteous lyrics? Yes! If I had to compare them to anybody, I’d have to mention bands like Face To Face, Rhythm Collision or other bands that were on, for example, the Dr. Strange label back in the 90’s. Word is, they’ll be on the upcoming Rebel Time Records compilation.

!!UPDATE!! YOU CAN NOW DOWNLOAD THE ENTIRE DEMO HERE …4 SONGS PLUS LYRICS AND PICS…

They’ve got a 4 song demo out…here’s one of the tracks…more later…

NOBODY’S LISTENING

tell me about frustration, tell me about regret
let me tell you something, what you give is what you get
is that money where your mouth is? when you talk do you make cents?
do you draw the line and cross it, or sit on the fucking fence?

keep doing what we’re doing, and we’ll try to get it right
nobody’s fucking listening in this fucked up town tonight

bullshit attitudes set you up for the fall
how fucking punk rock can you be for ten bucks at the mall?
we live this life for real, we carry all the scars
this isn’t what we do, this is who we are

you say support your fucking scene
you don’t know what those words mean
nothing happens in this town, we hear you piss and moan
you get the chance to do your part and stay the fuck at home

keep doing what we’re doing, and we’ll try to get it right
nobody’s fucking listening in this fucked up town tonight

BROADCAST ZERO CD REVIEW – “FU*KING BRILLIANT”

BROADCAST ZERO

Review of the new BROADCAST ZERO disc from Canada’s ‘Exclaim Magazine’:

Broadcast Zero
Yesterday, You Could Change The World
By Keith Carman

West coast politi-punks the Rebel Spell just met their East coast equivalent. Proof positive that the political opinions most crusty/street punk bands strive to instil in their fans don’t go unnoticed, agitated quartet Broadcast Zero blaze forth with their inspired take on the state of the world. Infusing many personal and anecdotal elements into the fold though, they escape the trappings that weigh down their contemporaries, resulting in tunes that are equal parts sincere and informative. More importantly though, the fervour with which Yesterday, You Could Change The World is delivered seems unparalleled. Every track attacks as if it were the last moment these boys will have on the face of the Earth, relegating the aggression acts such as the Casualties or Total Chaos affect somewhat like, well, bullshit. This is the new breed of street-wise punks and their enthusiasm, vigour and dominance are fucking brilliant. (Rebel Time)

FREE SOCIETY, ISSUE 19

Free Society Nineteen

I managed to snag a copy of the latest issue of FREE SOCIETY at the local Anarchist Book Fair a couple of weeks ago. All I can say is: Holy Head Of Jesus!!

I was literally taken aback when I saw it. Stu has really outdone himself on this one. He’s kicked it up a notch, taking the zine from a half-size photo-copied affair to a glossy, full-size 50-page D.I.Y. digest. A lot of time, energy and effort have gone into issue 19 and it shows…it’s a real labour of love.

And, it not only looks good, but it reads good too. It really is a fine blend of music and politics. You get Stu’s well-articulated and timely thoughts on the Security And Prosperity Partnership, Indigenous struggles and more as well as interviews with the likes of Cresote and Rakkaus. There’s book reviews, record reviews and zine reviews. Free Society has it all.

But, my favourite part of this zine was Stu’s touching ode/tribute to his recently departed Super-Duper-Cycle. It made me want to go out to the garage and give my own two-wheeler a hug. Stu’s own personal musings are always appreciated, they give Free Society a bit of a ‘homey’ touch.

And, it was nice to read that Stu is, like myself, a big fan of Zatarain’s Dirty Rice Mix…good eatin’ for sure.

Issue 20 of Free Society is going to include a compilation of Canadian bands, so stay tuned for that one! Stu hopes to have it out in a month or two.

Dirty Rice

So, my advice? Cook yourself up a box of Zatarains, grab a copy of Free Society and
your beverage of choice and settle in for a good, long read.

THE CLASS WAR KIDS…A COUPLE MORE SONGS…

…just because they are so damn good….

DISCONNECTED AND APATHETIC

Discontented and apathetic, a world full of broken hearts and shattered dreams. Disillusioned and disconnected, our common threads torn apart at the seams. I can see you’re angry and you and me, we’ve got a common fucking enemy. But all I see is apathy when what we need is some fucking solidarity. Disappointment and misdirection, because it’s tough to act and it’s easy to blame. Disapproval followed by inaction but, your silence and death will be one and the same. I can see you’re angry and you and me have got a common fucking enemy. Seems to me there’s so much apathy when what we need is some fucking solidarity…

THE RACIST POLICIES OF THE NEW WORLD ORDER

These divisions of race and class needs to be bi-passed
Political prisoners will see some justice at last
The detention centers filled with political dissidents
Prisoners of war, they opposed the government
The racist policies a genocidal celebration
The modern day slaves state incarceration.
Mumia, Peltier, Black panthers, earth liberation
Freedom for the victims of these capitalist nations.

Resist-Resist-Resist
Occupation of thee imperialists
Resist-Resist-Resist
Media control of the Capitalists

Stopping the racist attacks by the pig factions
Cop watch this terror state, shame full media inaction
The move bombing, Dudley George, FBI shakedowns
The sick taste that left us all insanely unsound.
When they came for me no one was left to speak out
Their sick diversion of patriotism shadowed us in doubt
we only wanted justice, freedom equality for all.
Victory! As the empire crumbles and falls.

THE CLASS WAR KIDS

ClassWarKids

“Finally! A revolution you can dance to! The Class War Kids are a political punk rock band who believe that music can be a force for positive change in our world, and that music should be catchy as shit! We make it our goal to have something to say, and for it to get stuck in your head for days!”

That’s how St. John’s THE CLASS WAR KIDS describe themselves…and I can’t argue with a word they say. Catchy-as-heck, infectious, anthemic, sing-a-long, inspirational and confrontational political punk rock. They’ve been swell enough to pass along some tracks from their upcoming demo ” A Strong People Need No Leader,” and, wow, I haven’t been this excited since hearing, say, The Class Assassins, Broadcast Zero or The Rebel Spell for the first time. Look for them as they criss-cross this great country of ours in July and August.

Here’s a track from the demo:
BREAK ME

LET’S GO!
You try to tell me things will never change; “No matter how hard we fight the world will stay the same.”
But you’ll never break me down.
You’re jaded words will never break my heart, every time I get knocked down I’ll just get right back up.
You’ll never break me down.
We resist these tyrannical regimes and you wonder why we take it to such extremes..
But you’ll never break me down.
Throw off the shackles of this imperialist hold, the voice of the people can never be controlled.
You’ll never break me down.
Break me!

BROADCAST ZERO: Review Of The New CD

A review from the fine folks at EQUALIZING X DISTORT RADIO/ZINE:

Broadcast Zero “Yesterday, You Could Change the World” CD

BROADCAST ZERO fall in a long line of bands that marry a message with melodic three chord punk. It’s infectious and it’s substance oriented. They remind me of a modern day MARILYN’s VITAMINS which is to say something like DILLINGER 4. And they keep good company with bands like the FALLOUT and the REBEL SPELL who come from the same school of punk. This is the debut release by this new fledgling label that cut their teeth as part of Insurgence. And it’s a dandy for both label and band as a debut release. Fans of HOSTAGE LIFE and BLACK JACKET should check out BROADCAST ZERO for their tales of hardship and disappointment all to a racing pace that has gang chorus sing-a-longs.
